We can break apart numbers to subtract. When we subtract, we can make cube trains to help show what we are doing. Start with the bigger number then take away one at a time. See how many are left. |

We can use tools to model breaking apart. When we subtract (or take away), we can cross off or take away counters to show that. Counters or cubes are a great way to help see that. |

We can use problem solving tricks to help us to understand and solve word problems. When we solve word problems, we must look at all of the parts. 1. Read the problem. 2. First, look for what you need to find. That is the question part. Underline it. 3. Then, look for the information you need to use to solve. Circle it. 4. Last, use that information to solve the problem. |

2.1 - You can show taking away using pictures. In subtraction, we take away. We can circle and cross out the pictures that we are taking away. |

2.2 - You can model taking away using different tools. In subtraction, you can use counters or cubes to help show your steps. minus means to take away the difference is the answer in a subtraction problem |

1.4 Problem Solving Model Addition We can find the answer by asking... 1. What do I need to find? 2. What info do I need to use? Then, show how you solved! |

1.1 Use Picture to AddWhen we add, we can draw
pictures to help us. There are 2 cats. 1 more cat joins in. How many cats are there in all? There are _____ cats. |
1.2 Model Adding ToWhen we put numbers together, they get bigger! We can show that we are adding by using a + and = sign.
The + sign goes between the two numbers you are adding together. The = sign shows what happens after you add together the numbers. |
